What "good data" means in this sector
Metals is the hardest-scrutinised CBAM sector, and the data bar is set at installation level — a company-wide average is generally not usable. What your buyer's verifier needs to see:
The metal exporter's data package
- Production volumes per installation — monthly, reconciled with your records.
- Fuel consumption by type — furnaces, generators, machinery, fleet.
- Electricity consumption — calculated with your country's actual grid factor, not an EU average.
- Process emissions where your processes generate them.
- Factors and documentation — named, versioned sources, and a calculation a third party can re-trace.

Iron and steel and aluminium, including many downstream products — screws, bolts, structures, wire, sheets and more. If your goods fall under the covered CN codes, your EU importer must account for their embedded emissions.
Installation-level data: production volumes, fuel and electricity consumption, process emissions where relevant, the factors used, and documentation a verifier can follow. Company-wide averages are generally not enough.
Your buyer uses conservative Commission default values, which typically overstate emissions — and from February 2027 that means higher certificate costs on your goods. Credible actual data makes you the cheaper supplier.
Electricity-intensive processing on the region's carbon-intensive grids makes Scope 2 dominant for many producers. Calculating it with the correct national grid factor — documented — changes results by multiples versus EU averages.
