How to calculate Scope 2 emissions from your electricity bills

Knowing how to calculate Scope 2 emissions comes down to one multiplication: the kWh on your electricity bill times the emission factor of the grid it came from. It is usually the biggest number in a Balkan inventory, and the factor is where generic tools go wrong.

How to calculate Scope 2 emissions: an electricity invoice scanned into Karbon360

How to calculate Scope 2 emissions, step by step

  1. Scan each monthly electricity invoice for the facility. This is the fastest route.
  2. Confirm the period and the kWh. If the invoice shows day and night tariffs, the total kWh is what counts.
  3. For sites with interval meters or a building management system, use CSV import for monthly kWh instead.
  4. Repeat for all twelve months and every facility. The coverage view shows any month still missing.

District heating and cooling go under Scope 2, Heating and cooling: enter the delivered energy in kWh, or the unit on the bill, per month, and attach the bill as evidence.

Location-based vs market-based

The GHG Protocol Scope 2 Guidance describes two methods. The location-based method uses the average emissions of the grid where the electricity was consumed. The market-based method reflects the electricity a company has chosen through contracts and certificates.

Karbon360 applies the location-based method, with the national grid factor for each facility's country. If you hold a green-energy certificate, keep it on file; location-based reporting is what the product applies today.

Why the factor decides the result

Balkan grid factors differ by multiples between countries, from hydro-heavy to lignite-heavy. The factor used is shown on every record, so a reviewer can see that the inventory was built for this region. See emission factors.

Special cases

  • Shared building, one meter: enter your share and note the method.
  • Own solar panels: enter only electricity bought from the grid.
  • Bill covering two months: split the kWh by days.
  • Generator electricity: not Scope 2. Enter the generator's fuel under Scope 1.
